Describe your role at BASF

I am in charge of marketing and new business development for sustainable polyamides and precursors in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region at BASF.

Can you explain your participation in the T-REX Project? 

BASF has developed a proprietary chemical recycling technology to convert PA6-rich textile waste into new raw material for garments in an environmentally friendly way. We call this material loopamid® and in the T-REX Project we will produce loopamid® from post-consumer household waste collected by Veolia.

With loopamid®, we are paving the way for a circular economy in the textile industry. Unlike traditional recycling methods, which often result in downgraded or lower-quality materials, our technology enables the regeneration of PA6-rich textiles into pristine raw materials. This not only reduces the reliance on fossil resources but also minimises the environmental impact associated with textile waste. By closing the loop and reusing materials that would have otherwise been discarded, we conserve valuable resources and reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

What do you think is the biggest challenge the T-REX Project will need to overcome? 

The feedstock/raw material challenge is a key aspect in addressing textile waste. It represents a paradigm shift from the traditional business model in the chemical industry where we source specified raw materials from large-scale, centralised production sites like oil drills. Instead, we navigate a decentralised and fragmented landscape of diverse waste streams. This requires creative thinking, collaboration, and innovative solutions to effectively manage and utilise this waste.

What is the biggest opportunity to unlock within textile-to-textile recycling? 

One of the pressing challenges we face today is the staggering amount of textile waste generated each year. It is a critical issue that demands our attention and action and was the key motivation behind the development of loopamid®. 

The entire textile industry has a responsibility to address this issue and find sustainable solutions to recover valuable resources from these vast waste piles. By doing so, we can not only reduce the environmental impact but also unlock the potential for a circular economy where waste is minimised, and valuable materials are repurposed and given new life. Let’s work together to tackle this challenge and create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Future outlook: How do you envision the textile value chain in 2050?

I see a mix of linear and circular approaches that are low in greenhouse gas emissions and digitised. Circular practices promote material reuse and recycling, reducing waste and environmental impact. Prioritising low greenhouse gas emissions helps mitigate climate change.

Digitalization enhances resource management and operational efficiency. Balancing these elements is crucial for a resilient and environmentally conscious future.
